Revive her has been pumping new life into London's party scene over the last couple of years, from tropical disco dens to Turkish snooker clubs, the ReviveHER regulars have been raving away the nights and days to some of our favourite DJ types. Their next party is on Friday and takes place at Dalston's infamous Superstore, a den of desire, dirtyness and occasional bouts of downstairs-dodgems.
Not only is our resident disco lord and master of the blog Namedrop (yes people I am talking about myself in the third person and will be doing so for the rest of this post) playing but so is one of our favourite DJ's Eddie C, along with a live performance from the the first lady of disco Kathy Diamond.
In the run up, ReviveHER interviewed Namedrop and asked him to put together a top ten and little mix (no not those birds from X-Factor) which is entitled "The Sounds of TFC" alll of which you can now pleasure yourself with here. (IT'S RIGHT AT THE BOTTOM OUNDER THE FLYER BTW)
The party is on December 16th @ Dalston Superstore and kicks off at 9pm.
Being a self described digger of rarities, oddities and records of contrasting notions of genius, Namedrop has decided to give us a run down of his favourite tracks of the moment or atleast of 2011. He makes cups of tea at DJ History HQ just to get a glimpse of these rarities, oddities and records. But who actually is Namedrop? Well, Bi-Bop asked him to play at the ReviveHER Xmas party so he thought he better find out more and if he is actually a real person!
ReviveHER: So Namedrop, what’s the idea behind the elusive name Namedrop. Sounds quite mysterious?
Namedrop: It all comes from the night Ian Brown broke my phone, That’s really all I can say on that one.
Are you real? Or more to the point is Namedrop another entity or pseudonym of another DJ?
As far as I know I am real, then again what or who is real? It’s a complex philosophical argument that you are getting into here. Descartes argued that the only proof of our own reality is that we think, or that we are capable of cognitive processes “Cogito Ergo Sum”. So we can’t rely on our sensory perception as our senses have let us down before, therefore the fact that you can see me or I can see you, in no way proves that either of us actually exist. I know this all sounds very matrix-like but this argument has existed way before Keanu dodged bullets in slow motion. Bet you are glad you asked….
Are you Tensnake?
nope, though he wishes he was me.
But you like to watch X Factor with Tensnake?
I know some people will look at me like I am some kind of idiot but I bloody love X-Factor. You get all these people that go on about how it’s the spawn of the devil and is intrinsically linked to the collapse of British society but I love it, it is so rubbish it actually become brilliant and yes Marco and I watched it once before I interviewed him. He loves it as well! I also love America;s Next Top Model and especially Miss J. If I could choose one person in the world to be friends with it would be him. I am sure we would get along pretty well, plus my walk needs some real help, I have terrible posture.
You say you humped a sofa with Mungolian Jet Set. Was this in the Lab at Berghain?
Thankfully it wasn’t or the outcome may have been very different.
You sorted Prins Thomas out with a fancy dress outfit. Are you sure he needed one!?
Well it was Halloween and despite Thomas’ at times shocking attire he obviously didn’t have a spare cape, top hat or any plastic bling laying around in the bottom of his wardrobe. I guess if the theme had ben “drunken Viking” then he probably would have already been sorted out on that score.
And you claim to have beaten Balearic Mike at an arm wrestle. You’re surely lying? He’s a Manc and has a big beard.
I didn’t just beat him, I embarrassed him, there’s a picture of it somewhere. If only his arm wrestling skills were as impressive as his record collection! Balsamic Mike is a legend, just not in the arm wrestling world.
So for somewhat of a social underlord you do sure to drop a lot of big names in your DJ biography and claim to have played a lot of big parties. Is that why you’re actually called Namedrop…because you like to drop a lot of names in casual conversation?
No it’s because all those big name DJs are always dropping my name at parties, trying to get themselves girls and free drugs and booze, it’s pretty sad really.
You sure must make a good cup of tea in order to be rewarded with DJ sets at Low Life, DJ History’s Secret Weapons and Electric Elephant?
Haha, mate my tea making skills are second only to my record selection skills, oh and my pun skills as well, they are next level, I am ace at puns I should really work for the Sun, though Brewster is pretty class at puns too. DJhistory loves puns.
The Electric Minds residency must have come about because they joined the office in the DJ history building. They tasted the much talked about Namedrop tea, right!?
Well I was playing for Electric Minds before they started sharing an office with DJhistory, however I am sure that the invitation would have been forthcoming much sooner had I been able to get a nice cup of English Breakfast in the mix at some point.
What’s this Benoit thing about then. Who is he?
He is basically this small, balding Frenchman with a bad attitude and an even worse array of jokes, well he only has one joke about my mum and me being fat, I can’t tell you it though, it will ruin his afterparty banter. I have DJed with him for a few years now, though he lives back in the south of France, so he only occasionally shows his face behind the decks with me these days. We played the last Halloween Lowlife together and I know he has a couple of gigs in Marseille soon. He has some amazing records and some absolute shockers. He is actually technically a better DJ than me but when we DJ together we just seem to have a very good understanding, despite the fact he is French, though luckily he has yet to go on DJ strike.
Is that why you play “French disco and ethnic disco”?
Well it’s one way that you can get away with playing loads of vocal tracks without having to put up with the for-the-most-part pretty shocking vocals that are slapped on most dance records. Also there is just something about a lot of foreign music that I love. I have been all over the world and have always been amazed by the music, plus I find the repetition in dance music to be limiting and sometimes dull, plus all my friends hate most of what I play them which only makes me love it even more.
In all seriousness though, you’re part of Join The Dots. Is that your label?
It was actually set up by three really good friends of mine and now Joe and Duff (Duffstep,/Duff Disco) are the head honchos but I have been involved pretty much since day 1. The label has had a really strong year this year, we have been really proud of our releases and it seems that lots of other people have liked them as well. The video’s that we had commissioned for Loose Fit’s Table Beggar got nominated at the British Music Video Awards, we have thrown a few parties and had our artists and residents play at pretty much every festival you can think of from Electric Elephant to Secret Garden party and Glastonbury. Next Year we are hoping to go one step further, release more music we love, throw more parties and generally get everyone chatting about us if we can, You can find out everything you ever wanted to know about us here http://jointhedotsmusic.co.uk/
Join The Dots are hosting room 2 at the Electric Minds NYE party. You’re playing at that I guess. Should we be heading to that on NYE?
We are not actually hosting room two but both myself and Duff Disco are playing. I am really, really looking forward to it, I was asked to play last year and it was a mint party, amazing scenes all round. Dolan who runs Electric Minds really puts the slog in to make sure all the little things that make a great party are in place. Just something like having a really good monitor makes so much difference. I know it sounds anal but if the DJ is comfortable then it really shows, it allows them to really get into it which is better for everyone. So yeah Electric Minds will yet again be a wicked party, they always are and J Shepheard is playing too and he making some seriously decent tunes at the moment. It’s like a house party but no one has to tidy up and I am playing, of course.
Well, enough of this chat, let’s see if your special mix and chart for us speak greater volumes than your tea making and arm wrestling. Thanks Namedrop.
Make sure to make it down to Superstore early to catch Namedrop’s special 3 hour “journey man set”
